First of, i still dont fully understand what rationalism means, so my question might not make sense. But like the title says, Is there anything from the recent Arizona shootings that demonstrates rationalism?|||Rationalism in a political sense is a kind of middle road between “realism” [focusing on how to achieve the best for nation or community as the priority] and cooperationalism (is there such a word? Is there a better word for it? [focusing on cooperation between everybody as the priority.]
What are the facts?: A mentally ill man, already recognized as dangerous but more or less untreated, shoots 20 people, killing 6 of them.
“Cooperationalism” is the current state of mental health law in the US. Everybody is supposed to cooperate to help the mentally ill without forcing them into treatment or custody. It is assumed that the evils of forcing a person to do something he doesn’t want to [even if he is out of touch with the real world] are worse than the evils of not doing so.
“Realism” would look at the situation and say, “Jared is very crazy, he is a problem in the community, so lock him up at least. Even if this doesn’t help him as an individual, it will protect the community. If it costs to much to give him quality treatment, we don’t have to do that. At least we are looking after the wellbeing of the majority.”
“Rationalism” would be between these two. It would say, “In general, the rights of the individual must be honored even when the majority doesn’t like it. However, the case of a psychotic person is different. He may not even be able to be rational, or to know what is best for him, let alone the community; he is profoundly out of touch with reality. In a sober state, he would not want to harm anybody. He is not able to make a rational decision about it. Therefore, for his benefit and that of everybody else, he should be detained and treated even if he doesn’t want this.”|||Shouldn't expect rational behavior (no): the killer, sheriff, and victims were all liberals. The only reasonable anything was the Palin response asking them to have some respect for the victims.|||it displays how irraional flaming libs can be that's for sure...|||No not in the least.........It was mere crazy shooting by a deranged person
