Where in Arizona can i go to buy a desert tortoise, the ones that eventually grow to be fairly large as in 3ft tall, not the tiny little turtles. I have no idea where to even begin on how to go about getting one.|||Unfortunatly, the Desert Tortoise does not get that big. You may be thinking of the galapagos tortoise, they can reach up to 500lbs! big Tortoise! And those, along with other large tortoises, require an Exotic reptiles lisence to own. Desert Tortioses are endangered, and thus illegal to own. California allows you to apply for a permit through the department of fish and game, but in Arizona, I believe it is just plain illegal.
The sulcata tortoise can grow up to 3 feet across, and over 200lbs. These ARE legal to own, however require a very large habitat. The best place to get a large variety of turtles and tortoises is to visit a reptile expo. Pick up a Reptiles Magazine from your local pet store, in the back it has a list of all reptile expos and shows in your area.
Also, visit www.petfinder.com and look for local reptile rescues in your area, and see if you can adopt one, adopting is always best!
Good Luck
