I mean, I've heard about people's reactions about the law that the Arizona governor passed through not to long ago, but I haven't found anything that says what the law is.|||Read the bill, Arizona senate bill 1070

It basically says that illegal entry into the usa is also against state law and gives the police the authority to verify legal citizenship of those stopped for other offenses of the law. Penalty assessments can be added along with deportation

There will be no racial profiling or mass arrests, just enforcement of existing federal laws, and now state, at the state and local police level|||The Latino or Hispanic community is against the law mostly but no one has interviewed other immigrant groups that are not Latino who can also run across the border. The law gives police the power to arrest someone for violating immigration law only if that person is under suspicion of committing a crime or violation. The police have to prove there was a reasonable suspicion through his contact with the suspects, he has to ask for any I.D. and after that can ask for immigration papers or a green card which people should always carry. It stands to reason if someone is a legal resident he would have some type of I.D., even a State I.D., social security card, employee ID or something. I think the problem of ranchers property being destroyed and breached should be resolved by electric fencing or barbed wire atop the fencing. I think Miki said it quite well, the local cops are trying to solve the illegal problem that the ICE agents wont do. Since they cannot deport anyone, they can now arrest them for being here illegally if they are suspected of criminal activity. Before now, they had to hand them over to ICE and all they do is release them.|||the law states the same thing that the federal does....that you must be documented to be in the country unless you were born here. but a federal law can only be enforced by federal government and the states cannot arrest or enforce breaking of the law....since our federal government cannot seem to handle this...Arizona passed it as a state law so state cops can handle the problem of people being in the state illegally.|||Here are some of the new law's main provisions signed by Arizona Republican Gov. Jan Brewer Friday. It takes effect mid-summer.

Makes it a crime under state law to be in the country illegally by specifically requiring immigrants to have proof of their immigration status. Violations are a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. Repeat offenses would be a felony.

Requires police officers to "make a reasonable attempt" to determine the immigration status of a person if there is a "reasonable suspicion" that he or she is an illegal immigrant. Race, color or national origin may not be the only things considered in implementation. Exceptions can be made if the attempt would hinder an investigation.

Allow lawsuits against local or state government agencies that have policies that hinder enforcement of immigration laws. Would impose daily civil fines of $1,000-$5,000. There is pending follow-up legislation to halve the minimum to $500.
Targets hiring of illegal immigrants as day laborers by prohibiting people from stopping a vehicle on a road to offer employment and by prohibiting a person from getting into a stopped vehicle on a street to be hired for work if it impedes traffic.

@ los mojados
what about the above is "twisting the truth"? have you even read the entire bill? i have. and no one supports illegal immigration. the whole point of supporting comprehensive immigration reform is to get rid of illegal immigration|||It says that unlike in the past, if you are being checked out for a crime, the police can demand ID and check it for immigration status. That's it. They can't go around on the street like the GESTAPO or any other crap they have you believing. They wouldn't want to anyway, especially with all of the scrutiny they are under.|||First of all, I don't understand why everyone who tried to defend the legal immigrants gets thrown out of the blogs because of the low ratings......
I just wanted to say to all of you who are born and raised in United States, as well as your family...
Imagine that you have a darker skin, maybe brown eyes and black hair. You speak English perfectly and you have been a US citizen your entire life. Then, after a law that has been signed, people start looking at you differently, even treat you like if you were disgusting. On top of that, a police man stops you on the street and asks you for your papers and you show them to him, so OK, problem solved.

But, imagine that EVERY DAY OF YOUR LIFE. You have to prove EVERY DAY that you are a US citizen. And worst, you have to be treated like trash from everybody who sees you with your dark hair and automatically thinks that you're illegal....

What does it feel?????

By the way, for all of you who are screaming "I don't feel secure with so many illegals here committing crimes!", I must tell you they are not the only criminals. Look up on the Internet the worst crimes ever committed or a list of serial killers, the vast majority of them were Americans....

Spanky, I don't think you got it. I am AGAINST illegal immigration..............I don't think it is fair to you, but I think you also need to see my point. I am legal but I have to put up with everyone treating me like trash, INCLUDING YOU! If you want respect, you better show respect also.|||The law requires state and local police to determine the status of people if there is "reasonable suspicion" that they are illegal immigrants and to arrest people who are unable to provide documentation proving they are in the country legally.

It also makes it a crime to transport someone who is an illegal immigrant and to hire day laborers off the street.|||It gives local law enforcement the authority to stop individuals, really without cause or reasonable suspicion, and ask for proof of their residency status. The bill states that there should be "reasonable suspicion" but we all know that is a weak requirement. Don't speak spanish in AZ.

Sound familiar? See: Nazi Gestapo|||this chick above me needs to shut the hell up. your talking about serial killers? thats not the crimes anyone is talking about tard. First off, they are criminals for even being here Illegally, making ALL of them criminals. Illegal immigrants account for a HUGE portion of rapes, theft and murders. Not to mention make up quite a chunk of the drug and gang population. The pay zero in taxes, and leach off those of us who actually do pay. anyone who defends Illegal immigrants needs to be deported as well. Im tired of being an American citizen whos entitled to less rights that a person who shouldnt even be here,|||Spanky, shut the hell up.

There is a reason why people come to the U.S. They want a better life, and want to live in a place where they can raise their kids to be the best, and they shouldn't be chastised by people like you just because you were here first. People don't realize that. They just see it as "omg they don't pay taxes, they don't even work, they don't do anything" Honestly, how many immagrants do you know that are like that?

I'm all for people from mexico coming here trying to make something better of themselves. ALL for it. But if they are going to abuse their welcome by not doing anything, go do it where you did it originally..

The people that I have met who have moved here from not just mexico, but el salvador, an Honduras, showed that they actually wanna be here for a better life, and do so much to prove it. I don't know where people get that mexicans are lazy and don't work. I think that's the biggest myth of them all, because any mexican I know (who's not a US citizen) will work 18 hours a day for 3.00 and hour because they are hard workers, and a majority of them do that so that their kids can go to school.|||It is about time we enforce our immigration laws. Nice of David to provide the link to the bill. The only problem I can see is the "any legitimate contact" phrase. How will that play out. Cops id'ing every latino they see? That doesn't work for me. But I don't know if that's how it will be enforced.

Many answers here are from people who believe anyone who wants to come here should be allowed. I think that's naive and dangerous. We take in a million a year legally (all nationalities, as it should be). How many resources and how much infrastructure will that alone consume?

If I'm a racist because I don't believe we should have open borders, then I'll wear that moniker proudly.|||Spanky is a complete idiot.

I understand where you are coming from as well Vita. Thank god I live in Illinois. I would tell a police officer to suck my ... if one ever came up to me randomly asking for identification. Stupid law that's aimed at Mexicans and violates their rights.|||Evelyn...US code Section 1304(e) already requires aliens to have identification at all times. US code 1324 allows states to enforce immigration law. Why don't you just acknowledge you support illegal immigration and stop twisting the truth.|||http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/su鈥?/a>|||Spanky said it best. Illegals are entitled to American rights, which includes the constitution. Most of the ones protesting it are the illegal ones.|||its a carbon copy of our Federal laws already voted on and passed but not enforced that's why it will be allowed and it will be enforced. the end is near for those people|||LET ME BREAK DOWN FOR U, IF YOUR DARK BROWN YOUR GETTING PULLED OVER JUST FOR THAT AND WASTING YOUR TIME ASKING YOU MORE QUESTION THAT NORMAL|||its gonna get rid of all the illegals.
