arizona: I've noticed that the Cardinals are the only football team that says the state in the name. Are there any other football teams that have the state name instead of the city? Why are they called the Arizona Cardinals and not from the city they are from?|||lol...this is a great question and not many people know the answer.... there are other teams with state names. \ the AZ Cardinals were first called the phoenix cardnials..( I still have that t-shirt) it's an oldie but goody.. although there name was phoenix cardinals they played in Tempe,AZ. (sundevil staduim wheww!!!) the owners then relized (as other teams with the same story) If they change the name to repensent the state you can "BLACK OUT" the whole state if attendence is poor. if it is a city name, you can only block the tv channels for that city only. They used to be the Houston Oilers. There are also the New England Patriots and Carolina Cougars that have a region in their name.
