You do need a driver's license to drive. You and your family members will need a health insurance card if you need medical care. You probably should have a birth certificate for your son for various situations that will come up over the years, but I don't see why you would need it for the trip. Even if you have car trouble and have to fly home, your son won't need ID, but both parents will.
