arizona: In Arizona they have passed a law that a police officer can ask people to show proof of citizenship. As of right now only an immigration officer can do this(this summer it will take affect i hear). Some people think that this ma cause racism, what are your thoughts?|||It is based on federal law. Any American can be asked for their “papers”, or government issued drivers licenses as I like to call them, if there is reasonable cause. Why should illegal immigrants, who are breaking the law, by being in this country illegally, be exempt? If the federal government would actually enforce the laws that are on the books these state laws would not be necessary. Arizona politicians understandably oppose the law only to secure re-election votes; their rants also DO NOT impress me. I support the law--it's about damn time someone stood up against the ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION problem. All U.S. law enforcement officers should have the well protected right to ask people for legal proof of U.S. citizenship and residency. I'm a legal U.S. citizen and therefore--I have NO problem being asked to prove that. Anyone found to be ILLEGALLY residing in the U.S. should be held in short-stay facilities, prepped to be hauled back INTO their own country. Repeat offenders should see years Federal prison time if they want to stay in the USA.
