I was reading about a homeless man that camps out on federal land in Arizona and rides his bike into town to work. I was planning on doing something similar, but I've heard people freeze in deserts at night. So what about like 5 to 10 miles outside of major cities in Arizona, in the desert. Would it really get that cold there during winter to where it would be uncomfortable in a tent?|||Yes it does. Up North around Flagstaff, Payson, Prescott it snows in the winter but even down in the valley in Tucson is snows.....Phoenix, Mesa, Tempe it doesn't snow but temps get pretty cold in the middle of winter, typically you'll see lows around 40-50 degree which is pretty cold if your sleeping in a tent.

So it all depends on what part of AZ your going to be "camping".|||I'm 35 miles west of Phoenix in Buckeye. Three years ago in the middle of January it got down to 19 degrees once in the early morning hours. Many times it has been in the mid-twenties and thirties. You can die from exposure unless you are prepared with heat, shelter and warm clothing.

Many times in winter the high temperatures are in the forties and fifties, so you can just imagine how cold the nights get when the Sun goes away.|||It definitely can! People don't realize that nights in Arizona can drop below freezing. We live in the city and often wake up with frost on our car windows in December, January and February.

Be very careful about camping in the desert. People make the mistake of camping in areas that look safe and end up being dry creek beds that are periodically hit with flash floods. And some areas of the desert are used by drug smugglers from Mexico and can be a bit dangerous. And most of the land immediately surrounding the cities is owned by various Native American tribes. They will arrest you if you camp on their land.|||Ehh, the coldest it will get even in my city is 32-35 minimum, so for about 2 months it could be that cold. Not much different though from my town vs desert. Get a good sleeping bag, and some coals.|||Yes it can be cold there
